There is an abundance of research in the management of patient’s post-stroke but many therapists struggle with how to integrate this new knowledge into practice. This course will enable therapists to learn and integrate current evidence-based recommendations in the areas of (1) upper extremity management, (2) gait training (3) balance and falls, and (4) strength and cardiovascular training. By the end of the course, participants will understand the current principles regarding intensity and how to apply this to all areas of treatment for patient’s post stroke. In addition, participants will learn the principles of how to evaluate research articles to foster continued learning and integration of new findings in the future.
Learning objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Perform and interpret common outcome measures across the ICF model to help track and document patient improvements.
- Utilize prediction models, which can aid in establishing diagnosis and prognosis across the continuum of care.
- Apply intensity principles to multiple types of interventions.
- Apply key concepts of motor learning, that are critical for improving outcomes post-stroke.
- Describe effective long-term management strategies for individuals post-stroke including secondary prevention and wellness.
*Attendees will be required to identify their knowledge of education about outcome measures (e.g. gait speed, Berg balance scale, Fugl Meyer Upper extremity) and interpretation of literature (e.g. MCID, p-values, and Clinical practice guidelines) prior to attending. This will allow the instructor to gear the course toward the learners’ needs.
