This 2 part session will provide therapists with tools to incorporate therapy for optimal motor outcomes into the educational model, and will discuss sensory and motor systems and their impact on a student’s ability to focus and enhance memory while being able to process information.
Session A:
How Can The Team Support Motor Needs and Educational Needs in the Mild or Moderately Challenged Child
This session will provide therapists with tools to incorporate therapy for optimal motor outcomes into the educational model. Practical collaborative tools will be emphasized. This session will help therapists identify common struggles, as well as proactive steps to promote success in the educational setting.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to establish and enhance current treatment sessions:
1. To identify ways to expand and create new programs within the educational setting
2. To define your role and value within the educational team
3. To summarize the importance of sensory/motor development in the learning process
Session B:
Aligning Strategies to Support Motor Needs with Educational/Curriculum Goals
We will discuss sensory and motor systems and their impact on a student’s ability to focus and enhance memory while being able to process information. Therapists will learn how to impact neuroplasticity to facilitate learning.
Objectives:
1. To describe neuroanatomy/physiology of learning
2. To explain how therapists can make an impact on neuroplasticity.
3. Describe treatment strategies to address commonly seen diagnosis in the school setting
Dr. Melissa K. Gerber, OTD, OTR/L is a seasoned and respected clinician with extensive experience in pediatrics. She began her career in Adult/Pediatric inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation and acute care. Currently, she has been working for the Great Neck Public Schools for the past 21 years. She is president of 4MYKIDSOT, a private practice where she provides therapy and evaluations.
Dr. Gerber has presented at Education Resources, Therapies in the Schools on Visual Processing: Treat, Remediate, Refer. She has presented at Therapies in the schools in 2016 as the keynote speaker and presented on Aligning Motor needs with Educational Goals. She is enthusiastic to share her experiences and provide strategies that can be incorporated immediately. She is also affiliated with Puzzle Art Therapy, and enjoys sharing this program.
