Session A: Practical Tools to Address Sensory vs. Behavioral Issues & Behavioral vs. Sensory Issues
Therapists are often asked, Is it sensory, or is it behavior? as if the two are mutually exclusive. This session will discuss the overlap of sensory and behavioral challenges. It will discuss the most under-recognized sensory challenges. Participants will learn practical strategies that will impact both domains; as sensory processing and behavior are intimately related.
Participants will:
1. Describe the connections between certain behaviors and certain sensory processing challenges, and the limitations of the ABC method of looking at behavior.
2. Identify some of the most under-recognized sensory challenges and why they are critical in ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, and LDs.
3. Utilize effective strategies to enhance function and behavior.
Session B: Smart But Scattered: Helping Children Get Organized, Stay Focused and Control Emotions
Children with weak executive skills struggle to complete tasks in a timely fashion for many reasons: they can’t focus, get organized, or manage their emotions in the face of challenging tasks. This workshop will describe strategies that can be used to help children with weak executive skills be more efficient and productive at school and at home.
Participants will be able to:
1. Identify 11 executive skills that govern goal-directed behavior and name at what age these skills are fully mature in typically developing individuals.
2. Describe three broad sets of strategies that can be used to support children with weak executive skills at home or at school.
An accomplished lecturer, Debra Dickson is a pediatric physical therapist, owner of Therapy Works Pediatrics LLC in CT and creator of the clinically acclaimed BEAR HUG vest. Ms. Dickson is NDT certified in pediatrics and has a strong background in sensory processing, nutrition and immune function as they relate to children with developmental disabilities. Together with Anne Buckley-Reen, she developed a program for therapists entitled The Whole Child: S.A.N.E. Strategies for Success. They are currently co-authoring The Whole Child Handbook, which incorporates a multisystem approach to understanding developmental disorders and successful strategies for improving function. Ms. Dickson lectures both locally and nationally and sits on the professional advisory committees of several nonprofit agencies.
Peg Dawson, Ed.D., NCSP, received her doctorate in school/child clinical psychology from the University of Virginia. She worked as a school psychologist for 16 years in Maine and New Hampshire, and since 1992 has worked at the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she specializes in the assessment of children and adults with learning and attention disorders. She has many years of organizational experience at the state, national, and international level, and served in many capacities, including president, of the New Hampshire Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the International School Psychology Association. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of topics, including retention, ability grouping, reading disorders, attention disorders, the sleep problems of adolescents, the use of interviews in the assessment process, and homework. Along with her colleague, Dr. Richard Guare, she has written several books for parents and professionals on the topic of executive skills, including Smart but Scattered and Smart but Scattered Teens. Peg is the 2006 recipient of the National Association of School Psychologists’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
