This beginner-intermediate course will focus on developmental care and therapeutic interventions in the NICU. It will focus on the infant’s experience in the NICU, and how the neonatal therapist can best support these infants from the beginning. You will learn how to provide developmental support, optimize outcomes, reduce parental stress, provide cue-based feeding, and provide collaborative developmental care through implementing best practices on your unit. Special populations will include the very low birth weight infant, the late preterm, the long term NICU infant, and the infant with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Incorporate developmental core measures and therapeutic strategies into the therapist’s role, in the areas of handling, positioning, feeding, the environment, pain, and sleep from the earliest gestational age
- Develop strategies for implementing cue-based feeding in the NICU – learn how to choose a program that is best for your unit. Will include video learning.
- Identify key elements that the feeding specialist needs to know about breastfeeding in the NICU
- Develop strategies for increased involvement and support in your NICU
- Apply developmental care and neuroprotection into your practice with the very low birth weight infant, the late preterm, and infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Lisa Kleinz, MA, SLP/L, is a Speech Pathologist who has worked in level 3 NICUs for over 20 years. She has also served as a Developmental Care Specialist, working with staff and families to create change in the NICU. She has certifications in Newborn Individualized Developmental Care Assessment Program (NIDCAP), Developmental Care Designation (NANN), Infant Massage Instructor,and Lactation Specialist. She is a Certified Neonatal Therapist and is an active member of National Association of Neonatal Therapists, in addition to being a committee Board member.
Lisa received her bachelors degree from the University of Illinois and her masters degree from Indiana University. She has presented at NANT conference and Gravens conference. In addition, she provides frequent Developmental Care and NICU education in the Chicago area and is a Clinical Specialist for Dr. Brown's Medical.
