COURSE DESCRIPTON:
Cortical / Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is now the leading cause of visual impairment in developed countries and increasingly common worldwide. It is defined as a verifiable visual dysfunction which cannot be attributed to disorders of the anterior visual pathways or any potentially co-occurring ocular impairment. Some degree of visual recovery is seen in the vast majority of children with cerebral visual impairment, and it has been postulated that improvement of sight in patients with CVI is actually a form of delayed visual maturation.
Visual impairment in CVI can be as severe as no light perception to normal visual acuity. Cognitive visual function may be impaired in most of these children leading to misinterpretation regarding what is in the visual field, and where things are visuospatially.
As each child with CVI is likely to have their own unique visual and motor deficits, this course will discuss evaluation as well as rehabilitative intervention techniques not only for these direct deficits but also for concomitant ophthalmic disorders with the underlying principle that vision is a behavior and can be predicted. However, problems in patients with cerebral visual loss are not limited to vision but are complex. This course will teach the attendees to address vision which when addressed with sensory, motor and cognitive deficits allows us as therapists to provide holistic care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify the common visual deficits encountered in children with CVI.
- Select appropriate tools to screen for visual deficits in infants & children.
- Choose treatment resources and strategies to improve visual perceptual and motor skills in infants and toddlers towards engagement in appropriate developmental activity.

Birth to three therapists including OTs, PTs, SLPs, and Special Educators working in the Early intervention/home care.

What is CVI: Research and Systematic Reviews
The shift from cortical visual impairment to cerebral visual impairment

Postural Development and Vision
Binocular Vision
Visual Screening/ Visual Evaluation to include higher order visual spatial functioning deficits as a result of CVI and visual disturbances commonly associated with CVI such as in visual acuity, contrast sensitivity function, visual fields and ocular abnormalities.
Goal writing
Individualized treatment approaches as each child will have their own visual and motor deficits
Subah Gupta MHS, OTR/L, SCLV, CBIS has over 25 years of experience, 13 of which have been spent working with pediatric and adult patients with visual disorders. She has a Low Vision Rehabilitation Graduate Certificate Degree and is certified in sensory integration and brain injury. She also received AOTA’s Specialty Certification in Low Vision (SCLV). Ms. Gupta teaches as a guest lecturer at Thomas Jefferson University and Widener University in Pennsylvania. She has been on committees which organize specialty low vision conferences at the state level and has presented on varied topics in vision at the IOTA State Conferences over the last decade. She is the owner of Sum Therapy, a private practice in Pennsylvania which delivers pediatric as well as low vision occupational therapy services. She enjoys developing continuing education webinars and presents on a variety of topics related to vision.
