You will learn to describe adventitious sounds and what diagnoses they might indicate, classify valvular sounds heard with auscultation, and discuss the mechanisms and sounds heard in Aortic Stenosis and mitral regurgitation, which are commonly seen in the ICU and acute care setting and their implications.

This practicum/lab course will teach you the various characteristics of cardiac and pulmonary sounds: frequency, intensity, duration, and quality and their meanings. You will learn to describe adventitious sounds and what diagnoses they might indicate, classify valvular sounds heard with auscultation, and discuss the mechanisms and sounds heard in Aortic Stenosis and mitral regurgitation, which are commonly seen in the ICU and acute care setting and their implications. A stethoscope is recommended for this session and we suggest that you have a friend, roommate, spouse or otherwise willing partner to practice on during the lab.

Steve Sadowsky, an ABPTS Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist (emeritus), is also an internationally recognized author, consultant, practitioner and teacher.Mr. Sadowsky is a passionate advocate for best clinical practices, and brings a wealth of experience to his course instruction. He has practiced in adult and neonatal cardiopulmonary transplantation and critical care units at large major medical centers, as well as in long-term outpatient skilled and home care settings. As an associate professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Steve taught in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum in Chicago, and was director of their Cardiovascular and Pulmonary ExerciseTesting Laboratory. Steve was a member of Item Bank Review Committee with the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy and served the APTAs American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties with distinction.
