This course is designed to enhance the clinical decision-making skills of participants for early mobilization and safe, effective treatment of acutely ill patients. As more patients survive critical illnesses, intervention must complement the highly technologic, life-saving medical therapies, regardless of practice setting. Discussion of lines, physiologic monitors, lab values, and diagnostic test results will focus on implications for treatment. This Evidence-Based course will highlight a multisystem approach to the acutely ill patient. Participants will integrate examination findings into individualized care plans that can be implemented from ICU and across acute care and post-acute practice settings.
Participants will be able to apply course learning immediately to:
- Identify signs and symptoms of patient instability and the need to modify or terminate treatment.
- Discuss how patients become deconditioned and how to reverse this for functional recovery.
- Interpret and apply multisystem examination techniques for the complex patient including vital sign monitoring and interpretation of diagnostic tests such as imaging modalities, ECG analysis, pulmonary function testing and laboratory blood analysis.
- Determine appropriate rehabilitation interventions for persons with multisystem disorders based on examination findings, as well as patient/client goals.
Audience: This intermediate level course is designed for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and assistants who care for acutely ill adult patients in the ICU, acute care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, subacute rehabilitation centers, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and home care
Daniel Malone brings to the classroom deep, expert knowledge and hands-on experience in acute care and cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation, gained during his 18 years as a practicing physical therapist at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. His experience encompasses all service lines, from critical care to long-term care, including outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. Dr. Malone obtained a specialist certification in this area from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. He is editor and contributor of the critically acclaimed, Acute Care Physical Therapy: A Clinicians Guide Slack Inc, 2006. He is active in the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section of APTA, serving as program chair for the past seven years, as well as being an elected member of the nominating committee. Additionally, he has served as a member of the Specialization Academy of Content Experts and the Standards Setting Committee for the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary specialization examination. Dr. Malone holds a masters degree in physical therapy from Temple University and a doctorate in physiology with an emphasis in acute lung and respiratory muscle injury from the School of Medicine at Temple University.
