As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, therapists across the continuum must be able to successfully rehabilitate this challenging population in addition to other patients with critical illness. Survivors of critical illness including COVID, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and other respiratory disorders (COPD, E-cigarette, or vaping product use-associated lung injury [EVALI]) present with Post Intensive Care Syndrome, PICS. This course will emphasize current best practice for patients with PICS and will discuss the pathophysiology, diagnostic testing, and medical management of these complex patients.

This course will enhance the participant’s knowledge and clinical reasoning skills through lecture, case studies and participant Q&A. Cases will follow patients from ICU admission to post-acute and outpatient settings.
An additional session will focus on mechanical ventilation, artificial airways, and other patient support equipment (i.e., lines & tubes) typically found in the ICU.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of normal human anatomy and physiology in relationship to alterations that occur with critical illness resulting from COVID-19, ARDS and other respiratory disorders.
- Understand the multisystem effects of PICS impacting the cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal and neurocognitive systems.
- Apply rehabilitation examination techniques for the patient with PICS across the continuum of care.
- Create and apply appropriate rehabilitation intervention strategies for persons with PICS.
- Interpret patient’s tolerance to interventions through identification of normal and abnormal responses and adjust interventions to promote safe progression and achievement of patient goals.
