Course Description
Pediatric therapists commonly ask these questions about their patients with neuromotor dysfunction: “Where do I start? How do I prioritize in therapy? What is the most effective way to reach the functional goal?” “How do I work with children with complex issues for best outcomes?” This course answers those questions. Join in as we go through this unique in-depth analysis process integrating motor learning, neuroplasticity, Contemporary NDT and the ICF model. Go step-by-step through examination/evaluation, setting functional goals, in-depth analysis of system integrities and impairments, prioritizing, and developing treatment strategies. Explore impairments & treatment strategies specifically related to the Neuromuscular, Musculoskeletal, Sensory & Respiratory Systems. The information is presented through lecture, video and lab, including movement analysis and problem solving of children, and work with dolls. It is a dynamic course intended to give the participant skills that are immediately usable in their everyday practice, and effective with the children they treat.
Course Objectives
The participant will:
- Determine the differences between function & participation and why therapists need to go beyond milestones
- Apply the components of the ICF model & the NDT perspective using patient examples:
- Contextual Factors
- Participation
- Function
- Multi-system Integrities & Impairments
- System Integrities & Impairments, including:
- Neuromotor
- Musculoskeletal
- Sensory
- Respiration
- Utilizing the Assessment & Treatment Strategy Worksheet that incorporates the ICF Model, evaluate a child on video
- Identify the components of therapy Intervention using principles of Neuroplasticity and Motor Learning
- Write meaningful goals that have a life impact
- Measure the degree of progress/outcome using the GAS (Goal Attainment Scale)
- For a given child:
- Develop functional goals
- Identify Multi-System impairments/Posture & Movement Strategies related to a functional goal
- Identify critical components needed to perform a given task
- Determine possible System Impairments/Integrities related to the functional goal
- Prioritize impairments based on the functional goal
- Develop and implement appropriate treatment goals for a single session related to the functional goal
- Design a treatment plan addressing the critical components in an organized, prioritized manner using principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning
- Demonstrate treatment strategies that address critical components of an identified functional goal
Participant Requirement: Have a rag doll available for the Lab portion
Suzanne Davis Bombria, PT, C/NDT is an internationally recognized clinician, speaker & consultant. She is one of the investigators in the RCT project titled “Multi-modal intervention for children with cerebral palsy” and is versed in research. Currently residing in CT, Ms. Davis Bombria applies evidence-based practice with babies and children of all ages, specializing in intensive therapy as well as ongoing intervention. She enjoys teaching therapists around the world and is dedicated to providing insight into contemporary NDT. Ms. Davis Bombria is a Pediatric Coordinator-Instructor and Advanced Course Instructor for the NDTA (TM). Her passion for her work as a pediatric therapist, instructor and mother of a son with cerebral palsy, along with her easy presentation style, provide the theoretical and practical solutions all therapists can apply to their patient population.
