COURSE DESCRIPTON:
Learn how integrating primitive reflexes in the maturing nervous system can greatly enhance a child’s sensory-motor and emotional development maximizing their innate potential. Discover reflex assessments and intervention strategies to facilitate change and progress a child toward their developmental and participation goals at home or in the community.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Utilize play-based primitive reflex integration strategies to build head control against gravity in infants and toddlers
- Relate primitive reflex assessment to the functional deficits noted in the B-3 population
- Apply a treatment plan to build fluid and rotational movements in the B-3 population

COURSE OUTLINE:
Primitive Reflexes
- What are they and why are they important?
- Are we seeing a higher prevalence of retained primitive reflexes? Why?
- Emergence of primitive reflexes in utero, during and after birth
Primitive Reflexes and Their Relation to Infant Development
- Building movement against gravity
- Building flexion/extension (co-contraction of the trunk) to facilitate movement against gravity in all planes.
- Establishing head control and strength in all planes of movement
- Building body awareness and a sense of self
- Testing and activities for:
- Hands pulling reflex
- Tonic labyrinthine
- Landau
- MORO
- Establishing trunk rotation and fluid movement
- Testing and activities for ATNR reflex
- Does it need to emerge and integrate? Why or why not?
- Developing strength, tone, and stability in the feet
- The Babinski reflex and the feeling of “groundedness”
- Oral Motor Skills & Feeding
- Mouth Reflexes and their relation to oral motor skills & feeding.
Janine Wiskind, MS, OTR/L is a pediatric occupational therapist with over 20 years of clinical experience. She began her career in brain injury rehabilitation, transitioned into school-based practice, and now serves as the founder of On Solid Ground, a private pediatric clinic in Atlanta specializing in reflex integration, sensory processing, and family-centered care.
Janine is known for her dynamic, engaging teaching style and her ability to make complex neuroscience and clinical concepts practical and accessible. For more than 15 years, she has been presenting nationally for a variety of organizations and professional groups, sharing evidence-informed strategies that help therapists not only understand what to do, but also the critical why behind children’s behaviors and developmental needs.
In addition to her clinical and teaching work, Janine is the founder of Body & Brain Parenting, an online platform that provides parents with accessible education and tools to view parenting through the lens of occupational therapy.
As a clinician, educator, and mother of two teenagers, Janine brings both professional expertise and lived perspective to her teaching.
