COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This intensive course will focus on evidence-based care and clinical problem-solving skills for complex pediatric patients who are acutely ill. Focus will be on critical thinking skills and practical real-world solutions to optimize the evaluation and treatment of pediatric patients from their arrival in the ED through discharge from the hospital.
Participants will develop skills to initiate rehabilitation interventions including early mobilization from the start of the hospital admission process. In addition, participants will learn to refine the discharge plan based on diagnosis, prognosis, available options and family preferences. Through case studies and group discussions, participants will develop apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to maximize participation for pediatric patients whose childhood continues even during hospitalization. Movement and mobility, bathing and dressing, eating and toileting, and play can be achieved therapeutically and in unique ways during the child’s hospital course.
For each clinical problem presented, participants will learn:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify patient populations who may benefit from early assessment following hospital admission
- Select appropriate standardized assessments to determine functional needs for a variety of patient populations.
- Create functional goals to promote improved participation in daily activities at multiple levels of patient acuity
- Determine safe and effective intervention strategies based on acuity, diagnosis, age and/or developmental level to maximize engagement in functional daily activities during hospital stay.
- Recognize appropriate and safe discharge options and recommendations based on multiple patient factors

Siobhan O’Donnell, PT, DPT, PCS is an respected clinician with extensive and broad experience in acute care, rehabilitation, long term care, outpatient and home care settings. As a pediatric physical therapist in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, outpatient clinics and homes she offers a unique point of view from which she draws practical approaches to treatment of pediatric patients in the acute care setting. She is an enthusiastic presenter who offers insightful information beneficial to all members of the rehabilitation team. Serving as a clinical mentor and manager in a variety of settings enabled her to gain a variety of experiences including management of trauma and burn patients, venous malformations and NICU patients. She has shared her knowledge via various posters, presentations, podcasts related to pediatric physical therapy in the United States, and educated physical therapists in the United Arab Emirates in topics related to power mobility, augmentative communication and orthotic management.
