COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Medically complex and extremely premature infants have a greater survivability rate with advances in maternal/fetal medicine and NICU medical technology. Effective developmental interventions require therapists to understand embryological, maturation, and developmental impacts of these medical conditions with adaptations to manual therapy techniques to improve alignment and movement for the infants. This course will build on information from Baby Beats and Breaths but could be a stand-alone course for the seasoned clinician. Evidence based literature will be provided on development of movement, manual therapy techniques to promote ribcage/abdominal, upper airway, and segmental trunk control as infant transition away from positioning devices and require activation of postural control muscles. Information will be shared on interventions for the medically complex infant requiring ECMO, CRRT, PD, and early mobilization techniques.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify the impact of prematurity on musculoskeletal development and maturation.
- Correlate the maturation of infant reflexes, synergies, and/or planes of movement to motor skill development in premature infants.
- Assess alignment of the infant spine during positioning and handling.
- Demonstrate handling techniques to support optimal alignment for segmental spinal positioning
- Adapt the environment and/or handling interventions to reduce stress cues during motor interventions.
- Choose appropriate positioning or environmental adaptations to facilitate improved participation with feeding, diapering, and/or movement to support play development.
AUDIENCE:
This course is recommended for neonatal therapists, PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, and SLPs, working with infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Amazing course! Holly is fantastic, so smart, dedicated, ready to interact, answer questions, repeat demonstrations and ready to share all her "pearls" . Holly's educational material was very comprehensive and the bibliography contained the latest research. The demonstrations-handling, the varied case studies/patients presentations are so rich in details that one can't wait to see our little ones in the NICU in the next day! -Marisol S., PT
This is hands down one of the best NICU courses I've taken! As an experienced therapist I appreciate not spending too much time focused on NICU basics/principles, while still getting a thorough understanding of the WHY behind assessment and techniques being taught. We went over so many hands-on treatments that I felt comfortable beginning to explore on patients right away. Holly has such a wealth of knowledge and is a wonderful teacher! -Sarah B., OTR
Holly is an engaging speaker with a wealth of knowledge. This course provides excellent interventions to support neonatal and infant mobility through manual techniques. It is rooted in evidence-based practice and offers ample opportunity for discussions. -Lauren S., PT
Holly is an absolute wealth of knowledge and an excellent teacher. Really appreciated the advanced techniques shared in this course with an abundance of treatment ideas provided. Would take any course given by Holly!!! -Robyn M., OTR
Holly's knowledge is so vast in the world of NICU and medically complex infants. She not only shares the handling techniques but also the evidence to support it. -Hannah T., OTR
Holly is an amazing neonatal therapist! Her courses are packed with immediately useful information. I love how she uses evidence and gives the background/why for techniques. She provides personal responses to questions of attendees. I highly recommend any of her courses! -Rebecca P., PT
I love Holly Schifsky's courses, her ability to keep up to date on the most recent research as well as organize all the fundamental materials (for the presented topic) in one place are phenomenal and a wonderful resource.
