Therapists play a vital role in treating patients with COVID-19 as they progress beyond acute care and through the rehabilitation phase. This course focuses on the clinical therapy management of patients in rehabilitation, homecare, and SNF settings with debility and neurological conditions related to COVID-19. Discussions will focus on the various ways the medical care and therapy services can adjust services and how these adjustments will affect the rehabilitation outcomes of those patients.
Therapists facing this pandemic in the heart of New York City will share current evidence and their clinical pearls to evaluate and treat this patient population using a variety of case studies.
Course Objectives:
- Discuss the pathophysiology of COVID-19 and its impact and implications on patient rehabilitation.
- Explain infection control policies and considerations when providing physical therapy to patients with COVID-19 in the inpatient rehab setting.
- Choose assessment and outcome measures for patients with pulmonary and neurological conditions due to COVID-19.
- Design therapy treatment for patients with COVID-19 including modifying exercise prescription, utilizing limited resources under isolation, respiratory training, and addressing cognitive and psychological impairments as part of the interdisciplinary team.
- Analyze case studies of patients with COVID-19 in inpatient rehab and how they relate to the homecare and SNF settings.

Faye Bronstein is a Clinical Specialist and Senior Clinical Instructor at NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurological Physical Therapy with over 13 years of inpatient neurological clinical experience. Dr. Bronstein serves as a faculty mentor in the Neurological Physical Therapy Residency Program at NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation.
Melissa Chung is a Supervisor at NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation in inpatient adult rehab and an adjunct faculty member at NYU School of Education Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurological Physical Therapy and Certified Brain Injury Specialist through the Brain Injury Association of America. She has been practicing for over 15 years, serving primarily the neurological population in inpatient acute rehab. She serves as a faculty mentor in the Neurological Physical Therapy Residency Program at NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation.
Stephanie Windler is an Assistant Unit Supervisor at NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation in inpatient adult rehab. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurological Physical Therapy and has been practicing for over 11 years, serving primarily the neurological population in inpatient acute rehab and in acute care in the neurological ICU. She is the former residency coordinator for the NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency and current faculty mentor in the Neurological Physical Therapy Residency.
