COURSE DESCRIPTION
Evaluate and treat gait in children using evidence-based practices. Analyze the components and motor synergies associated with gait, from the acquisition of gait and its underlying components to the challenge of changing gait in children with a well-established pattern. This course aims to equip clinicians with the knowledge and tools to examine, analyze and execute effective intervention to further the child’s functional level. A variety of diagnoses will be covered including CP, DCD and Autism. Course instruction will include lecture, lab, and video case studies.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Relate critical movement components to the development of pre-gait and gait skills.
- Differentiate the phases of gait, including the dynamic and mechanical elements of gait and how to measure clinically.
- Critique pre-gait and gait patterns of typical children.
- Examine key aspects of developmental biomechanics, kinesiology and alignment for the acquisition of standing and walking.
- Analyze gait patterns in children.
- Differentiate between variety of causes, including identification of strengths and impairments in Body Structure and Function.
- Prioritize the components needed for development of a focused treatment plan designed to improve function in a given child.
- Defend treatment ideas with evidence.
- Execute interventions designed to improve components of gait to participate in functional activities in the home and community.
AUDIENCE
This course is appropriate for pediatric PTs, PTAs, OTs and OTAs working in a school, home care, outpatient, rehab, LTC or SNF setting.
Suzanne Davis Bombria, PT, C/NDT is an internationally recognized clinician, speaker & consultant. She is one of the investigators in the RCT project titled “Multi-modal intervention for children with cerebral palsy” and is versed in research. Currently residing in CT, Ms. Davis Bombria applies evidence-based practice with babies and children of all ages, specializing in intensive therapy as well as ongoing intervention. She enjoys teaching therapists around the world and is dedicated to providing insight into contemporary NDT. Ms. Davis Bombria is a Pediatric Coordinator-Instructor and Advanced Course Instructor for the NDTA (TM). Her passion for her work as a pediatric therapist, instructor and mother of a son with cerebral palsy, along with her easy presentation style, provide the theoretical and practical solutions all therapists can apply to their patient population.
