This was my first year attending the Therapies in School Conference and it was such an informative and incredible experience, despite being online. Honestly the online format is what helped me attend this year, and has me looking forward to continued workshops with ERI and to keep eventual in-person opportunities on my radar. The presenters did great at translating their topics into a virtual format and still providing opportunities for engagement, participation, small groups, and discussion. It was challenging to pick afternoon sessions, because many of the topics were of interest or applicable to my practice and caseload. The team really made the most of this odd year, and I’m glad I made the decision to attend the full, 2-day experience.

This conference never let’s me down and even with having to navigate a “virtual” conference, I still learned so much and got a chance to interact and collaborate with others in the field. Fabulous conference!

Join Mary Massery and Learn Rehabilitative Care and Treatment Techniques for Patients Experiencing Lingering Symptoms of COVID-19

It has been over a year since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic – and while there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel, medical professionals, including PTs, OTs, and SLPs, are seeing a rise in patients experiencing debilitating symptoms months after contracting the COVID-19 virus. Patients experiencing these lingering symptoms initially coined themselves “COVID-long haulers” or “Long Covid,” and in February 2021, the National Institutes of Health officially named the condition “post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection,” or PASC.  Research says about 10% of people with COVID-19 are diagnosed with PASC, and while PASC appears to affect people differently, symptoms include varying degrees of fatigue, brain fog, loss of smell and taste, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain, chest pain.

Therapists working in rehab settings can learn how to navigate this new medical landscape through ERI’s live continuing education webinar “COVID-19 Long-Haulers: Potential Long-Term Physical Problems.” Taught by acclaimed speaker Mary Massery, an expert in rehabilitative care, this new course focuses on COVID survivors who are medically stable, but not returning to their pre-morbid health status and/or pre-morbid activity levels.  Mary will teach a multi-system approach to determine these patients’ short-term and potential long-term physical problems especially as they relate to core stability and breathing mechanics. Mary will also present a contextual model of postural control (soda-pop can model) to assist therapists in anticipating potential problems of long-haulers’ trajectory of recovery.

COVID-19 Long-Haulers: Potential Long-Term Physical Problems is currently being offered on two dates.

NYC Therapists to Teach COVID-19 Knowledge and Learnings in New, Live Webinar

Occupational therapists, physical therapists, and assistants are treating an increased number of patients experiencing the damaging effects of COVID-19, especially after hospital discharge.  New York City was one of the earliest and hardest hit epicenters of COVID-19 and healthcare workers on the ground had to modify their treatment techniques and plans to accommodate for new, debilitating symptoms affecting patients in rehabilitation clinics, homecare, and skilled nursing facility (SNF) settings.

Faye Bronstein, Melissa Chung, and Stephanie Windler are three such healthcare workers and part of a multi-disciplinary team at NYU Langone Health Rusk Rehabilitation. The facility’s staff is hailed for their response to the pandemic, rapid reconfiguration of services to treat the onslaught of critically ill and recovering patients, and adjusting rheir approach to the evolving pandemic crisis. Faye, Melissa, and Stephanie are sharing their COVID-19 related lessons in the new, live webinar “COVID-19: Beyond Acute Care – Treating Patients in Rehab, Homecare and SNFs.”

The one-day live webinar takes place April 11, 2021, and will focus on clinical therapy management of patients in rehabilitation, homecare, and SNF settings with debility and neurological conditions related to COVID-19. Using case studies, Faye, Melissa, and Stephanie will share current evidence and their clinical pearls to evaluate and treat this patient population including ways to adjust treatments with relation to COVID-19 precautions and how those adjustments affect outcomes.

Do not miss the chance to learn from three therapeutic pioneers serving on the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic.
