COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Challenges with infants and children demonstrating complex swallowing and feeding disorders are addressed in a holistic evidence-based framework that considers interrelating systems. Populations range from newborn infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) through children in school based & rehabilitation settings. Problem solving/intervention will be addressed through lecture, videos, and case analyses. Functional outcomes are emphasized through targeted intervention strategies based on sensorimotor learning principles and consideration of neural plasticity. Problem areas include: airway (e.g., laryngomalacia, laryngeal cleft, vocal fold paralysis, tracheostomy/ventilator); GI tract (e.g., gastroesophageal reflux, eosinophilic esophagitis); nutrition/hydration; advancing feeding in NICU and beyond to include tongue & lip tie; tube feeding & weaning; barriers to oral feeding & intervention strategies with; picky/finicky eaters. Discussions will include the urgent need for specific measurable outcomes and pros/cons for varied frequency and intensity of direct and indirect interventions/therapies.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Apply knowledge of airway deficits for management decisions with infants and children who demonstrate oropharyngeal dysphagia
- Identify barriers to successful oral feeding (e.g., nutrition, GI tract, and neurologic conditions)
- Determine primary factors necessary to advance oral feeding for infants in NICU with primary caregivers actively involved
- Demonstrate strategies for advancing oral feeding with tube feeding
- Implement intervention strategies for picky eaters/children on autism spectrum with a range of sensory and behavior principles
- Determine strategies to measure intervention/treatment outcomes by time, frequency, and intensity
AUDIENCE:
Professionals involved in feeding and swallowing assessment and intervention in infants and children, to include speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, dietitians, psychologists, nurses, physicians, and social workers.
Age and Patient Populations: Infants through school age children with a wide range of etiologies for feeding and swallowing problems.

Joan Arvedson is such a wealth of knowledge! She spoke for almost 16 hours in the course of 2 full days and the information and teaching that she provided was astounding. I am thrilled that I had such a phenomenal instructor to learn from. -Marcy K., MA, CCC-SLP
I really enjoyed the course! I have taken several CEU's on the topic of feeing and plan to continue to further my knowledge on the topic. My passion is working with children as an OT, and I really enjoy working with children with feeding difficulties. My goal was to learn more about working with children who may be considered to be more severe - such as working with tube feeders or those with anatomical malformities, and I feel like the course did a great job in introducing more of this material to me to expand my knowledge as well as my comfort in working with this population. -Emilee S., PT
This course was very informative and provides fantastic information on how various birth and medical conditions impact children's ability to swallow and eat foods, as well as considerations for relationships with eating. -Katelynn L., OTR
Dr. Arvedson is an expert clinician with so much knowledge to share. As an OT, I appreciate how she values the importance of sensory and motor issues that may impact a patient's ability to successfully and safely participate in feeding activities. Her passion for feeding and swallowing is evident in everything that she does! -Adriana H., OTR
As an occupational therapist, it is very difficult to find a course that teaches several different methods of evaluation and treatment for feeding and swallowing disorders. Dr. Arvedson did an amazing job brining different presentation methods to offer ways to evaluate and treat feeding disorders. I would recommend this course to any therapist who is interested in learning about feeding and swallowing difficulties. -Shahnoor Dharamsi, OT
Dr. Arvedson was an extremely brilliant speaker. She presented this information in a professional way but made it easy for the entire audience to understandI will definitely look forward to taking another course from her. -Angelia Brown, SLP
